Smith Rea conduct audits of both onshore and offshore laboratory facilities on behalf of clients. The purpose of these audits is to ensure the integrity of the systems and processes used by the laboratory to derive test results from samples drawn for allocation, custody transfer, or quality control purposes.

This is generally achieved through review of the laboratory’s documentation and systems of operation prior to conducting a visit to the laboratory to witness sampling, sample handling and testing operations. During the laboratory visit a vertical audit covering the processing of one or more samples will be conducted. The vertical audit will involve the review of:

Test and equipment calibration records
Equipment maintenance records
Record-keeping systems
Calculations
Training records
Computer systems
Reports.
