What is Allocation Engineering
Allocation Engineering
Allocation Engineering is the application of scientific and mathematical principles to ensure the correct design, construction and efficient operation of systems used to allocate hydrocarbons between various identifiable parties in a combined process.

The actual practice of allocation engineering involves a multitude of activities including:
  • Development of allocation principles for commercial agreements
  • Development of allocation schedules incorporating detailed mathematical equations and algorithms for incorporation in commercial agreements
  • Use of simulation models to characterise the behaviour of hydrocarbons in process
  • Carrying out feasibility studies, e.g. to test modifications to allocation systems or the impact of new entrants
  • Carrying out uncertainty studies
  • Providing support for software projects
  • Operational support and troubleshooting of allocation systems
  • Development of data validation and statistical process control tools
  • Development of new approaches to allocation
The prime role of an Allocation Engineer is to ensure that any systems are constructed as simply as possible in accordance with the principles of the commercial agreements, the demands of mathematical rigour and precepts such as equitability and good engineering practice. Incorrectly constructed systems can lead to bias in allocated quantities which in turn leads to financial losses through mis-allocation and re-runs.

Our Allocation Engineers have the key skills in process engineering, mathematics and statistics to provide support in all areas of this field. Further details of our experience and expertise in a selection of the above are detailed elsewhere.
